The penalty of living beyond your means
May 12, 2011
In drawing your attention to John Greer’s latest Archdruid column,
I want to particularly emphasize this couple of sentences that say what ought to be self-evident.
“Still, the basic concept should be easy enough to grasp. The habit of living beyond our means is as much an individual problem as a collective one, and it’s a significant factor keeping many people stuck in a set of lifestyles that are as unsatisfactory as they are unsustainable.”
“Ought to be” self-evident, I say, but for some reason doesn’t seem to be. Could it possibly be that two generations of brainwashing by the advertising machine that is mass media could have something to do with people’s inability to see the obvious?
